Appalachian Spring

Appalachian Spring

  • Appalachian Spring is one of Martha Graham's most famous American themed choreographic works.

  • Performed for the first time on October 30th, 1994 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

  • Starred: Martha Graham, Erick Hawkins, May O'Donnell, and Merce Cunningham

  • The story of Appalachian Spring takes place in rural Pennsylvania in the early 1900’s. This piece tells about the story of a young couple trying to find joy and establishing roots in a new landscape. The bride/wife dances about her overwhelming and ambiguous feelings about the future. The groom/husband exhibits the exact opposite; his dancing shows his exuberance, positivity, and determination for a satisfying future. The audience can see his pride and blissful nature when he caresses his home and burst into a dance. The newlyweds can be seen in deep admiration while having optimistic thoughts for the future. The religious revivalist, even though faults the couple of doing sinuous acts, cannot bring the attitude down of the couple
